Background of thesis project
Volvo Construction Equipment, a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, dumpers, excavators, road machinery, and compact machines. The production is distributed in Europe, Asia, North America and South America and Volvo.
To maintain a leading position, it is important to develop innovative products with high quality and, at the same time, high energy-efficient powertrains.
Volvo CE, as part of the Volvo Group, has started to investigate further more the hybrid technology as possible solution to reach a high level of efficiency and quality on its off-road vehicles. To support this goal, it is important to work faster to come out to the market especially in the Electromobility segment. The goal is to define our processes for projects to reach a Start of production machine (SOP) by considering the need to reiterate at the market with the first few pilot machines. The process also should enable us to fix the problems/improvement that we find in the field and release them quickly in accordance with all the process steps.
Suitable background Of students
The student should preferably have a background in computer science. Experience and interest in software development process, optimization and automation is valuable. Own drive, curiosity, ability to analyze and conclude and document is important skills.
Description of thesis work
The main goal of the thesis work should be
  • Have a basic understanding about the models based development process followed in Volvo Construction Equipment
  • Literature study on process automation workflows and propose methods to improve/optimize the workflow so it is more suitable for automation
  • Investigate methods to connect the development process with the activity plan. So it is more efficient to track activities from start to end
  • Investigation on how to perform automation and compare between different methods that can be used for this.
A full report of the work carried out will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo CE. It will be possible for the student to perform the thesis at Volvo CE’s facilities in Eskilstuna.
