Cab Plant Engineer

Summary of Position:
The purpose of this position is to provide Technical support to the Cab Plant operations at NRV. This position is focused on our Joining Processes and Work Holding in a cross-functional nature. This includes the implementation of projects/programs to improve quality, reduce defects, improve up-time of equipment, productivity improvements, and maintenance of the documentation regarding processes deployed in the Cab Plant. This position also provides in-house welding certification to our colleagues. Given this role provides direct Production Floor Support, colleagues in this position can expect to spend large blocks of time in the Cab Plant.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and implement projects/programs to improve our processes, quality, productivity, maintenance processes/procedures, up-time of processes and work holding equipment.
  • Tooling and Fixture changes, modifications, and improvements.
  • Provide training on how to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot related process and work holding equipment.
  • Assist in the installation of process and work holding related equipment into BIW, including spare parts set-up, preparing technical, operating, and maintenance documents/procedures for Operators, PO’s, AT’s, Manufacturing Tech’s and the Maintenance Team. Coordinate training for Operators and all Support Functions as required.
  • Interface with equipment/systems suppliers to develop, specify, obtain quotations, and provide information for Purchase Requisitions for process and work holding related expense and capital items as required. Coordinate proper set-up of Spare Parts and Consumables with Maintenance and Stores as required.
  • Establish, qualify, and maintain weld schedules/programs for all resistance (spot) and GMA (MIG) welding operations in BIW to meet the needs of product designs and quality requirements. Document all process related information in a controlled manner.
  • Provide training to the Technical/Production Team on how to set up and program weld controllers to meet our weld quality requirements. Train the maintenance team on proper troubleshooting of equipment. Assure proper AM/PM schedules are established, tracked, and followed.
  • Establish test frequencies and procedures for assuring quality in our welding operations in BIW. This includes equipment calibrations, testing equipment calibrations, quality documentation, weld schedule audits, support annual Cab test requirements, and Fixture evaluations/certifications.
  • Train Manufacturing Technicians and Automation Technicians to adjust weld schedules/programs as needed to maintain quality. Maintain accurate records and documentation for this purpose in a controlled manner.
  • Train Operators and Principle Operators in the techniques and procedures required to produce correct welds as specified by product designs and test requirements.
  • Recertify our welders as needed and act as subject matter expert for BIW regarding process and work holding.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, and overall operations of the Training Cell in BIW.
  • Other Projects as assigned.

Skills
  • Proficiency in CAD Systems such as AutoCAD or Catia.
  • Knowledge and understanding of PLC’s, fault analysis, and computer analysis of the logic.
  • Experience with Robotic Welding Processes and Weld Controller Programming and interfaces.
  • Self-motivated with excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Skilled in the use of PC software common to the business world including Excel, Word, Project, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of metal working, metal stamping, welding processes, and tooling and fixturing for such processes.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
The minimum education and experience requirements can be met through any one of the pathways described in the charts below. Please note: In order to meet the minimum requirements, each item listed within the pathway chart must be met.
Path A
  1. Education: 4 year Bachelor Degree in Welding, Mechanical, Electrical or other related engineering Field
  2. Experience: 4 years of experience in Automotive, heavy truck Body-in-White operations, or other welding intensive manufacturing industries.
  3. Certification: Must hold a Weld Inspector Certification from the American Welding Society or currently have ability to obtain such at time of award/hire. If certification is not currently held, it must be obtained within 12 months of accepting position; failure to do so will result in disqualification from position.
Path B
  1. Education: 2 year Associates Degree in Welding, Mechanical, Electrical or other related engineering Field
  2. Experience: 6 years of experience in Automotive, heavy truck Body-in-White operations, or other welding intensive manufacturing industries.
  3. Certification: Must hold a Weld Inspector Certification from the American Welding Society or currently have ability to obtain such at time of award/hire. If certification is not currently held, it must be obtained within 12 months of accepting position; failure to do so will result in disqualification from position.
