Principal Engineer – Combustion System Development
The position is in our Simulation and Analysis Engineering Team within Powertrain Engineering. The candidate will work with the North America In-Cylinder Combustion System Level 2 representative (ICC-L2) to lead and/or conduct heavy-duty diesel combustion development programs. This involves planning, design, simulation, experimentation and analysis for combustion concept specification. The goal is to provide optimized combustion system hardware specification for Volvo heavy-duty engines. Other activities may include method and tools development (experimental and analytical) for continuous improvement activities. Candidate will operate in a multi-national work environment with regular collaboration with local and global counterparts.
Core Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or conduct planning, design, simulation, experimentation and analysis for combustion concept development and specification

  • Plan and support multi-cylinder engine testing and analysis for hardware optimization

  • Work with experts in 1D and 3D-combustion CFD to optimize combustion design

  • Collaborate locally with Product/project teams, Advanced Engineering project team, PE-Technology teams (e.g. Air, Fuel, Performance Application, etc.) & Engine Laboratory support organization

  • Collaborate globally with PSD-Combustion (global Advanced Engineering), PE-Combustion System Integration and Verification (global Powertrain Engineering)

  • Participate in relevant consortium and university activities


  • Technical Leadership: Demonstrated technical leadership in areas of combustion design/simulation/experimentation/analysis/integration and validation

  • Combustion Development Experience: Experienced in holistic system hardware development and optimization including in-cylinder combustion, turbomachinery and camshaft specification. Performance application/calibration experience is also preferred.

  • Planning/Execution: Demonstrated ability to successfully plan and execute concept-phase Combustion System development programs for improved closed and open-cycle efficiency and emissions. Experience in Volvo Develop Technology Process or similar is preferred

  • Attention to Detail: Perceptiveness and ‘first-principles’ analytical approach

  • Ownership / Accountability: Taking the lead in getting the job done and accepting responsibility for personal actions, costs and results

  • Ideal candidate has technical leadership experience with a strong background concerning combustion system development, experimentation and analysis

  • Ideal candidate is proficient planning, directing and executing work in an engine laboratory environment

  • Experience with combustion/bowl design, engine simulation (1D, 3D, numerical, etc.), engine calibration, and/or tool development is a plus

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or relevant technical discipline required; Master’s degree or higher preferred

  • 10-20 years relevant powertrain development experience

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Proficient in use of engine test cell and emissions equipment, test cell automation (e.g. Morphee), and engine calibration tools (e.g. ATI Vision, ETAS INCA). Experience with DoE method and tools for engine screening, modeling and optimization (e.g. ETAS ASCMO) is a plus

  • Proficient with in-cylinder pressure measurement and combustion analysis tools and methods (e.g. AVL Indicom)

  • Experience with Matlab or similar for data analysis and tool development is a plus

  • Experience with GT-Suite/1-D simulation is a plus
